after school club

Designed to help primary school children enhance their curiosity in the natural environment, our after-school sessions allow the freedom to explore, create and collaborate in the outdoors.

We know that after a long day indoors, children need the space and freedom to run wild and be free, and our sessions encourage this whilst helping explore their inner strengths and advance emotional, creative, physical, collaborative and bushcraft skills.

According to a report published last year by McKinsey & Company, the demand for higher cognitive skills such as empathy, critical thinking and collaboration will grow through “2030 at cumulative double-digit rates.” We focus on a range of forest-based skills to develop these, such as nature spotting, fire safety, knot making and shelter building, and our gold, silver and bronze survival skills badges give the children a sense of accomplishment that they have learned and mastered such key skills.  “Learning by doing” (Loughborough University, 2017) in the outdoors stimulates brain activity and helps contribute to collaborative learning skills. Researcher Tassoni states that “children tend to concentrate and persevere for long periods when they are ‘in control’ of their learning. Their levels of motivation are higher because they have chosen something that appeals to them” (2007).

The 6 C’s

We also use Kathy Hirsch Pasek and Roberta Michnick Golinkoff’s ideas of The 6 C’s to deliver sessions.

As a team working towards a common goal or outcome, our after-school children flourish and display these social skills for all to see.
Without even knowing it they strengthen the very social skills that are vital to their development whilst having fun as a unit, which ultimately is exactly what we’re all about!

Collaboration

How they self-regulate their input in group activities, whether they engage with their peers during tasks and how they understand, respond to and mould a situation.

Communication

How a child interacts with both their peers and the practitioners, how they engage and respond to ideas and how they articulate their thinking behind a decision.

Content

How they use their knowledge to build upon previous experiences and engage with tasks, whether they connect with the activities.

Critical Thinking

How a child absorbs the information they are presented with and applies this to future activities, whether they are inquisitive and observing, how they analyse situations.

Creative Innovation

How they experiment with a variety of experiences and explore their surroundings, how they use their curiosity to fuel their interests, how they use materials and tools to scaffold their own imaginations.

Confidence

How they grow their own mindset to pursue and achieve their goals, how they learn from errors and move on from them.
